A bushy shrub, 2 to 5 feet tall, of swamps and edges of lakes and streams.

Usually a cluster of 5-petalled, pale pink flowers 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. Leaves usually consist of 7 dull green leaflets with finely serrated margins. Stipules at the base of leaves narrow. Calyx persistent and spreading on fruit, which has bristly stiff hairs.

Few prickles on new growth, but may be plentiful on old wood. Distinct, stout, hooked spines at the base of each leaf.
