Northern Pitcher Plant
Sarracenia purpurea

A highly specialized plant with hollow pitcher-like leaves; these fill with water entrapping insects which when "digested" provide essential nutrients to the plant. Flower is solitary, large (~2 inches wide) and purplish red. Sepals, petals and stamens all attach to the base of the ovary, which in turn has an expanded umbrella-like style at its apex.
