Northern Pitcher Plant |
Sarracenia purpurea |
Pitcher Plant Family - Sarraceniaceae |
A highly specialized plant with hollow pitcher-like leaves; these fill with water
entrapping insects which when "digested" provide essential nutrients to the plant.
Flower is solitary, large (~2 inches wide) and purplish red. Sepals, petals
and stamens all attach to the base of the ovary, which in turn has an expanded
umbrella-like style at its apex. Photographed June 28, 2000 at the Purdon Conservation Area near Lanark, Ontario. |
