Generally a short (under 3 feet), small shrub with pink, usually solitary 5-petalled
flowers (about 1.5 inches wide) with many stamens and pistils. Leaves are dull
green, pinnately divided with 5 to 9 toothed leaflets. At the base of leaves
are narrow stipules. Usually spines below the stipules, but these may be absent
