Leaves narrow and elongated (1.5 to 4 inches long), opposite or in whorls of 3, and unstalked or somewhat clasping the stem.

A showy plant with an upright stem terminating in a spike of many magenta to purplish flowers having 5 to 6 wrinkled appearing petals.
