Two to 3 hanging greenish-yellow flowers arise from the center of the top tier of leaves. Flowers (about 0.5 to 0.75 inches long) have 3 petal-like sepals and 4 petals, all of which curve backwards, 6 reddish stamens and 3 long, reddish-brown stigmas that also curve upwards and backwards.

An upright herb (1 to 2 feet tall) of moist woods with two tiers of whorled oval to lance-shaped leaves (5 to 10 lower leaves and 3 to 5 upper) with smooth margins.
