Flower heads ¾ to 1¼ inches wide with 6 to 8 yellow ray flowers (sometimes absent) and yellowish brown to dark brown disk flowers. Leaves elongated (up to 6 inches long), without stalks, opposite, and with or without marginal teeth. Stems often hairy.

An annual herb, often in dense stands in swamps or wet fields, with many flower heads that tend to nod as the flower ages.
