White ground-cherry |
Physalis grandiflora |
Nightshade Family - Solanaceae |
A 1 to 3 foot tall herb in which the quite hairy stems and leaves produce a clammy
to sticky sensation when touched. In this species, the mainly white flowers (about
1.5 inches wide) have a distinct star-shaped yellow center. Flowers have
5 fused petals forming an open bell-shaped structure edged by 5 shallow lobes.
Leaves alternate, egg-shaped and coarsely toothed. As the fruit matures, the sepals
grow to form a papery covering producing a hanging lantern-like structure.
