A tall (6 to 12 feet) herb with a thick, rough-bristled, reddish-green stem and long,
alternate, deeply lobed and clefted leaves that are generally aligned north
and south, hence the common name. Sunflower-like heads 2 to 5 inches in width
and 20 to 30 yellow ray flowers that are each 1 to 2 inches long. (Photographed at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden - September 13, 2002) |
