As the common name implies, particularly the lower leaves are virtually stalkless and have a heart-shaped base clasping the reddish coloured stem. Leaves opposite and entire and both leaves and stem exude a milky sap. Bell-shaped, white flowers about ¼ inch long with 5 marginal lobes.
