Each short-stalked flower has two distinct lips with the upper split into two lobes
through which projects a tube of united stamens surrounding the style. The lower
lip has three lobes. Between the flowers are slender elongated, leaf-like

A tall (2 to 5 feet), stately herb with bright red flowers in an elongated spike.
