Dense heads of scarlet flowers characterizes this 2 to 3 foot tall upright herb. Each flower is bilipped with two stamens projecting from the narrow upper lip. Below the flower head there are reddish bracts. Leaves opposite, 2 to 6 inches long, lance shaped and coarsely toothed. Stem square.
