A smooth, stout, erect flower stalk 1 to 3 feet tall. Elongated leaves that are considerably longer than the flower stem. The latter with a single terminal staminate (male) spike below which are 2 to 12 female (pistillate) spikes. Female spikes with many spreading flowers with inflated ribbed bases and a prominent 2-toothed beak. Bracts associated female flowers extend beyond the top of the flower stem.
