Fringed Sedge
Fringed Sedge
Carex crinita
Sedge Family - Cyperaceae
Sedges are often attractive grass-like plants growing at the edges of lakes and streams and in marshes.
In the case of fringed sedge, flower clusters (spikes) are stalked, elongated and pendant with 1 to 3 separate spikes of male flowers at the top and 2 to 5 female spikes hanging below. Each female flower develops to a small, nut-like seed (achene). (Photographed - July)
Stems are generally sharp-angled and 3-sided, and the leaves are long and narrow with a basal sheath surrounding the stem.
