The upper lip is smooth in appearance, i.e., without a crest as in some other related species with yellow flowers.

A delicate-looking, low-growing (6 to 16 inches tall) plant with bright yellow flowers and alternate, intricately dissected, pale green leaves.
The flowers, composed of four modified petals and hanging from a delicate stalk, are tubular structures with a short posteriorly projecting spur and an extended upper and lower lip anteriorly.
