Barberry Family --- Berberidaceae

Flowers small (about 0.5 inches wide) and purplish-brown to yellowish-green with 6 pointed sepals each having a tiny, thickish petal at the base. (Photographed at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden - May 8, 2002)

The two reddish-green leaves are highly divided into leaflets, each of which have 3 to 5 lobes.

A 1 to 3 foot tall early blooming spring wild flower with branched, loosely arranged clusters of flowers.
