A common, delicate, medium-sized green fern with relatively long, smooth leaf stalks and lance-shaped leaves with pointed tips and the widest portion near the base. Leaflets also lance-shaped, paired, horizontally positioned (even basal ones) and cut nearly to the midvein into 12 or more lobes which are blunt at the tip and have smooth margins. Fertile leaflets appear narrow as the lobe margins curl under to partialiy envelope the two rows of sori.
